Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital is the largest children’s hospital in the UK, providing world class care to poorly children 365 days a year and receiving over 185,000 patient visits every year.
The hospital is a centre of excellence offering specialist treatment for children from across the North West of England and beyond and has a national reputation for providing the very best care in a number of specialities. The hospital receives patients from as far north as Cumbria, down to Stoke and across to North Wales but for some services treats children from across the UK.
The hospital is home to the main Bone Marrow Transplant unit outside of London and boasts the first paediatric accredited unit in the UK. The Burns unit is the largest specialist burns unit in the country providing treatment to over 450 children and young people each year, while the Paediatric Intensive Care unit is the largest in the country – providing care to very sick children from across the region.
Although many patients may only spend a few days at the hospital, for many children the hospital becomes home as their treatment requires them to stay for many weeks or months at a time.
Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Charity aims to make a difference to children being treated at the hospital by supporting continued excellence in treatment, care and research.
The support of the Charity means that the hospital can provide additional resources that make life easier for patients and their families who use the hospital.
To support research projects
To improve our understanding of children’s illnesses
To help to create an environment that’s more child-friendly to provide state-of-the-art equipment for diagnosis and treatment.
Projects that the charity supports include Clown Doctors who visit the hospital once a week to help bring fun and laughter to a child’s bedside – helping them forget about their treatment and to enjoy their hospital stay. The charity also provides additional equipment – for example a Mobile CT Scanner which will lessen the risk of moving a critically ill child and provide highly important information without delay. The charity also help to support pioneering research projects that are developing new ways of preventing and treating complex, life-limiting and life threatening childhood illnesses.
